Farm Sheds Australia I Engineered Kits for Every Wind Region

A farm shed is a steel-framed agricultural building used to store machinery, hay, fodder or livestock. Global Sheds supplies farm sheds as engineer-certified kits in genuine BlueScope steel, in spans from 4 metres to 30 metres, rated to wind Regions A through C under AS/NZS 1170.2. Every kit ships with site-specific engineering drawings you can lodge with your council. We supply kits only — we do not build.

Every shed we quote is engineered to the wind region, terrain category and soil conditions of your actual address — not a generic template. That is the difference between a shed that passes council and one that gets knocked back, and between a shed that survives a storm season and one that does not. We have been designing steel buildings for Australian conditions for more than 18 years, and our designs are ShedSafe accredited to the National Construction Code.

What size farm shed do I need?

The size of your farm shed is set by three things: the widest machine you need to fit, the tallest machine at transport height, and whether you need to drive through or back in.

Start with your tallest machine. Measure it at transport height, with any comb, spray boom or auger in the travel position, then add 500mm of clearance. That number is your minimum wall height — not your apex height. People measure to the apex, then find the machine hits a purlin two metres in from the opening.

Then work out your width. Take your widest machine, add one metre either side for door frames and walking room, and that is your minimum clear span. A clear span shed has no internal columns, so the full width is usable.

Common farm shed spans:

Clear spanTypically suits
9m – 12mUte, tractor, small implements, general farm storage
15m – 18mTractor plus implements, workshop bay, fodder storage
21m – 24mHeader or large harvester storage, multi-machine sheds
27m – 30mFull machinery fleet, contractors, large-scale operations
Over 30mSupplied as multi-bay with internal columns

Thirty metres is the largest clear span we supply. Beyond that, the shed is designed as multiple bays with internal columns, which is usually the more economical answer anyway.

The most common sizing regret we hear is length, not width. Adding three metres of length at the design stage costs very little. Adding it two years later usually means a new shed.

What wind region is my property in?

Australia is divided into four wind regions under AS/NZS 1170.2. Your region is determined by your address, and it drives the entire structural design of your shed — frame spacing, member sizes, bracing and footings.

RegionClassificationUltimate wind speed (up to)Broadly covers
Region A
(A0–A5)
Non-cyclonic162 km/hMost populated southern and eastern Australia
Region B
(B1–B2)
Intermediate205 km/hTransitional zones near cyclone-prone areas
Region CCyclonic238 km/hNorthern tropical coast — including Cairns and Darwin
Region DSevere cyclonic288 km/hExtreme coastal corridors in WA and the NT

One thing worth knowing: agricultural and farm sheds are rated using these Region classifications, not the N1 to N3 housing ratings you may have seen quoted elsewhere. Those housing ratings come from a different standard and applying them to a farm shed is a red flag.

You do not need to work your region out yourself. Give us your address and it is part of the quote.

Do I need council approval for a farm shed?

In almost all cases, yes. Farm sheds are classified structures and councils generally require approval before you build, even on rural-zoned land.

Our strong advice: call a Class 10a building certifier in your area before you commit money to anything.

Certifier fees and approval timelines vary enormously between councils, and knowing the number up front stops nasty surprises later.

The three things that most commonly cause a knock-back are heritage-listed properties, overall height, and how close the shed sits to a boundary. All three are far cheaper to solve on paper than after the steel arrives.

Every Global Sheds kit includes the site-specific engineering drawings your certifier and council will ask for.

Hay shed, machinery shed or open-front shed?

Hay Sheds

Built tall and open to allow stacking and airflow through the bales. Height and clear span matter more than enclosure — you are designing around stack height and the reach of the machine loading it.

See our full hay shed range.

Machinery sheds

Designed around vehicle access and clearance. Wide openings, tall clearance, and usually enclosed on at least three sides to keep weather and dust off equipment.

See our full machinery shed range.

Open-front farm sheds

One long side left open for drive-through access. The most economical option per square metre, and the most common general-purpose farm shed, though the open face needs careful orientation against prevailing weather.

What's included in a Global Sheds farm shed kit?

Every farm shed kit includes:
•  Structural steel frame, cut and pre-punched to your design
•  Genuine BlueScope steel cladding, in Colorbond or Zincalume
•  All fixings, brackets and flashings
•  Site-specific engineering drawings for council lodgement
•  Assembly instructions
•  Doors, roller doors and windows as specified in your quote

What is not included: concrete, the slab or footings, erection labour, council fees, and certifier fees. We supply the kit. You erect it yourself or engage your own licensed builder.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a farm shed kit take to deliver?

Generally 4-6 weeks however, lead times can vary with size, complexity and steel availability. We give you a  delivery window with your quote, before you commit to anything.

Can I build a farm shed kit myself?

Many customers do. Kits arrive cut, pre-punched and labelled with full assembly instructions. Larger spans generally need a crane or telehandler and some experience, so a lot of people erect smaller sheds themselves and engage a builder for anything over about 15 metres.

What is the largest farm shed you supply?

Our largest clear span is 30 metres. Larger footprints are designed as multi-bay sheds with internal columns.

Do you supply sheds for cyclone areas?

Yes. We supply Region C designs for eligible locations across northern Australia, including northern Western Australia and the Northern Territory.

Do I need a concrete slab before the kit arrives?

You need footings or a slab ready before erection, and the engineering drawings supplied with your kit specify exactly what is required for your site and soil conditions. Concrete is not included in the kit.

Do you deliver Australia-wide?

Yes. Global Sheds supplies kits nationally, to most areas, and engineered to the wind region of your address.
